Every stroke is different, which means every person's recovery and home adaptation needs are unique. Our role is to help you understand the options, coordinate the right professionals and create a home that supports your recovery and future independence.
Keith & Mary's Journey: When Mary suffered a stroke, life changed overnight. Everyday activities that had once been taken for granted suddenly became far more difficult, leaving Keith and Mary facing unfamiliar decisions about recovery, safety and adapting their home for the future.
Watch how our 7-Step Proven Process helped guide Keith and Mary from uncertainty to a home that supports greater independence, confidence and peace of mind.

Every stroke affects people differently, some people recover quickly, while others experience long-term changes that affect how they move around, carry out everyday tasks or use different areas of their home. Returning home after a stroke can present a range of physical, practical and emotional challenges. Changes in mobility, balance, strength, coordination and fatigue can make everyday activities more difficult, while adapting to life after a stroke often brings uncertainty for both the individual and their family.
Some of the most common challenges include:
The right support and carefully considered adaptations can often make a significant difference to independence, safety and quality of life.
It's completely understandable to focus on recovery immediately after a stroke. However, planning ahead gives you more options, reduces stress and allows your home to evolve alongside your recovery and future needs.
Early planning allows home adaptations to be carefully designed around both your current recovery and any future changes. Even relatively small improvements can help reduce the risk of falls, increase confidence, reduce reliance on carers and make everyday life easier while rehabilitation continues.
Early planning also gives healthcare professionals, occupational therapists and families the opportunity to work together to achieve the best long-term outcome.
Over many years of helping people following strokes, life-changing injuries and progressive conditions, we've developed our 7-Step Proven Process to remove uncertainty and coordinate every stage of the home adaptation journey.
Rather than simply carrying out building work, we coordinate every stage of the journey. We can arrange specialist occupational therapists where required, help explore funding options, develop practical design solutions, coordinate specialist equipment and carefully manage the adaptation works - all through one trusted point of contact.
Our role is to ensure everyone involved is working towards the same goal: helping you live as independently, safely and confidently as possible.
Every stroke is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Following a home assessment and, where appropriate, advice from a specialist occupational therapist, the right solution may include:
The most effective adaptations are those designed around the individual - not simply installed because they're available.
How soon after a stroke should I start thinking about home adaptations?
The earlier the better. Planning early allows more options to be considered and can help avoid unnecessary delays when returning home.
Do I need an occupational therapist before contacting John Ford Group?
No. If you already have an occupational therapist we'll happily work alongside them. If you don't, we'll arrange the most appropriate specialist occupational therapist from our trusted network of specialist OTs.
Can you help while my family member is still in hospital or rehabilitation?
Yes. Early involvement often allows planning to begin before discharge, helping create a smoother transition back home.
Can home adaptations be completed while I’m still recovering?
Many adaptations can be planned and carried out while rehabilitation is ongoing. Early involvement often allows work to be completed before returning home or during recovery, helping create a safer and more supportive environment as independence improves.
Will I know exactly what adaptations are needed immediately?
Not necessarily. Recovery after a stroke can change over time. Our role is to help assess your current needs while considering what may be required in the future.
Can you help me understand the funding options available?
Yes. We can explain the funding options available, including Disabled Facilities Grants, insurers, litigation funding and private investment, helping coordinate the most appropriate route for your circumstances.
Every person's recovery after a stroke is unique, which is why every home adaptation journey should begin with understanding the individual - not just the property.
Whether you're looking for advice, need help arranging a specialist occupational therapist or are ready to begin planning home adaptations, we're here to guide you every step of the way.
Please Note: No two journeys are the same. The information on this page is intended as a guide, based on one family's experience. Every recommendation we make is tailored to the individual's condition, home and future needs.
